Marginal Accuracy, Unimpressive Velocity

By Bill C. on Jan 26, 2022
I don't like writing bad reviews of products - especially from reputable manufacturers, but in this instance, the numbers tell the tale. Unfortunately, Norma ECO Speed was disappointing for both velocity and accuracy. To assess velocity, I chronographed this ammunition alongside CCI Stinger and CCI Segmented HP ammunition. Ambient temperature was 58 degrees. The ammunition was shot through a Winchester 72A rifle with a 25 inch barrel. Average velocity for 5 rounds was: CCI Stinger - 1578.4 FPS, CCI Segmented HP - 1520.2 FPS, Norma Eco Speed-22 - 1346 FPS.

To evaluate accuracy, I fired this ammunition in 2 different semi-auto rifles of documented accuracy. At 50 yards, one grouped 5 rounds in 4.5 inches with some bullets appearing to have struck the paper at an angle. The other rifle grouped 5 rounds in 2.5 inches. By contrast, these rifles will group 5 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity in less than a half-inch at 50 yards all day long. I also fired this ammunition in 3 different bolt action rifles at 25 yards. Each of these rifles will shoot one-hole groups at 50 yards. Groups were still marginal: 3 rounds touching and 2 flyers that opened the group to an inch; 3 in .5 inch and 2 flyers for a 2 inch group; and one that grouped 1.25 inches. Finally, I tried 5 rounds in a Ruger Mark IV pistol and had 2 failures to feed. This was especially disappointing since this particular Mark IV shoots Norma Tac-22 very, very well.

So there we have it: low velocity, mediocre groups from 5 rifles of proven accuracy, and 40% failure to feed from a high quality pistol. My experience says that this ammunition is an expensive disappointment. It may be a viable product for short-range use where lead-free ammunition is mandatory, but I do not plan to buy any more of it.
