Due to the packaging and shipping process, case necks are often slightly dinged or bent and need to be rounded up and sized to give proper neck tension. New and/or fired cases must be full-length resized or have the expander ball of the sizing die run through the case neck prior to loading.

Peterson 284 Win brass

By Robert N. on Jul 24, 2020
I’ve reloaded for many many years! This is my first experience with this brass! But I can say this ! I weight sorted 50 of the 100 cases purchased and they were no more than a half grain difference in these 50 ! Know I’ve used Norma and Lapua and did not get those results! I‘ve yet to fire these 50 to see expansion or OAL but I’m sure too be happy with the results

284 Winchester brass, 2nds.

The only reason I only gave this brass four stars is because the premium brass in this brand gets the highest award.
When Grafs got this brass in, it was advertised with 375 Cheytac and 408 Cheytac, and it was also advertised as being manufactured by an American company, so I knew it had to be Peterson brass. Premium Peterson brass has no superior competitor in the world. It is every bit as good as Lapua, and Norma. As a mater of fact I have Lapua and Norma brass that have a variation in thickness around the parameter of the necks by ONLY one thousandth of an inch. That is very good brass. And I also have Peterson brass that has absolutely no variation in thickness around the parameter of the necks. And Peterson brass lasts every bit as long as Lapua, and Norma. Peterson brass will take just as hot of loads without any primer pocket stretch as Lapua. So if I had to choose the better of the three brands, it would have to be Peterson.
Now this 284 brass that Grafs sells for half of what Peterson's premium brass sells for does have some imperfection, but let me tell ya, it's still way better than most other brass on the market. It's neck variation is only about a thousandth. Just for comparison, Winchester neck variation can be three thousandths, or even 4.
This brass had two pieces out of the three hundred that I bought that had a very small crease in the shoulder. Those two pieces are still very usable.
I turn this 284 brass into 6.5x284 brass.
Now if you do this same thing, you have to turn the necks down in thickness just a little so they aren't too thick. If you don't do it you'll have severe pressure problems, but for me thats perfect because I prefer the neck clearance to be only 2 or 3 thousandths. I turn them so they are all perfect.
With this 2nds Peterson brass I get 1/10th Moa in my 6.5x284 Norma Chamber in a regular match Shilen barrel. It's not a Select Match barrel. It's 32 inches long with a 7 inch twist. I get that accuracy with several different bullets. It's a real sweet shooter.
Just remember if you neck this 284 brass down to 6.5 you must turn the necks. After it's necked down, it winds up being up to .017 thick before it's turned. I only turn it down to .016 which gives me a neck diameter of .296 on a loaded round. My chamber's neck diameter is .2975 so it's tight, and it cannot be fired with a maximum book powder charge. If you want to use maximum book charges you need to turn these necks down to .014 thick or you'll have pressure issues.
But if you use this brass for what it is, 284 Winchester, you should have no problems. It's very good brass, and the primer pockets don't stretch out.
I have one of the 50 round boxes that I use the most that have been reloaded 24 times. That's no BULL.
I never bump the shoulder back, and I strictly use a full length bushing die from Redding. I have never annealed a single piece in that 50 round box of brass either.
